The easy reader edition of Don Quixote

Article 27.1 of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that “Everyone has the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to share in scientific advancement and its benefits”.

However, we see more clearly every day how current structures of the information technology world pose barriers of access for a large number of people with reduced ability for reading, writing or understanding (such as the mentally handicapped, or those with a limited cultural education, immigrants, etc.).

UNIVERSO CERVANTES wishes to bring Don Quixote to users with special needs, and has created an interactive edition of Don Quixote in an ‘easy reader’ format, whose special features are:

  • It strictly adheres to the European Directives of the ILSMH (International League of Societies for Persons with Mental Handicaps).
  • The text highlights the predictably more unknown words and provides a brief, clear explanation of their meaning.
  • The text provides illustrations to clarify meaning, which also comply with the European Directives of the ILSMH.
  • It includes reading comprehension activities which are interactive and self-correcting. Tutoring is recommended throughout the reading process.
